Montecito Rotary Club Newsletter

November 24, 2009

Our meeting served as a vivid reminder of what a spectacular resource we have in the Santa Barbara Museum of Art.  As a Museum its collection is many times the breadth, depth and  sophistication of a city of comparable size.  We thank member Larry Hammett for hosting us during our lunch and his instrumental role in making this Exhibit possible.  The display from the Noble Tombs of Mawangdui was amazing.  Considering that the artifacts were over 2300 years old and the stunning condition they were in.  Susan Tai, Curator of Asian Art, gave a  very thorough explanation of the Exhibit and explained many nuances and how they relate to Chinese culture, society, and values.   Arts & Letters provided a wonderful lunch.  Thanks to Sheryl Barnard for making our arrangements.

We welcomed back member Victoria Bentley from her adventures and good work in the Congo.  Victoria  and Larry Thompson reported on the Poverty Conference in Oxnard.

Your president is not the only member to have spent time in Cottage Hospital recently.  Christopher Carroll reports, in his own vivid words, that he was “zapped back to regular heart rhythms” and is happy to be recovering well at home.

Dick Douglas noted that the Montecito Rotary Foundation grant recipients have been announced for this cycle and will receive their grants on December 22nd at our Meeting.  The recipients for the first cycle of grants are as follows:

  1. Art for Humanities
  2. Boys & Girls Club of Santa Barbara
  3. Channel Islands YMCA
  4. Dyslexia Awareness and Resource Center
  5. Future Leaders of America
  6. New Beginnings Counseling Center
  7. Ushindi Center Project

Upcoming event:  Holiday Party next Tuesday at the Montecito Country Club at 5:30pm. Please bring a toy for Unity Shoppe (suggested range $15-$25).
