Rotary Club of Montecito

Weekly Meeting

August 4th, 2009

One has to admire a public official who gives out his cell phone number at a time such as this with no shortage of challenging issues.  Sen. Tony Strickland, Assistant Minority Leader, and our State Senator from the Nineteenth Senate District shared his views on the challenges and opportunities facing our state in the global economy.  There was ample time for questions and answers and the Senator’s cell phone is 805-573-4196 if you thought of a question after the program.  Thanks to Deborah Schwartz for her efforts in working with Senator Strickland’s office to make this event happen.

Another memorable feature of today’s program was the presentation by McKinsey Russell (Joan Price’s niece) from Ojai who presented a wonderful view of the PACE School in India near Calcutta.  McKinsey and several other teens had the opportunity to travel to India for a remarkable experience.  She is a senior at Ojai and very involved in her Interact Club.  Kudos to McKinsey for a great presentation and to Joan for making the arrangements.  Thanks also to Chris DeVries who shared developments in Community Service for this year.

I will be in Minnesota next week and Past President Paul Kremser will lead next week’s meeting.  Our speaker is a friend of Jeff Kerns named Paul Croshaw who will share some insights with us about Beekeeping.   Murray Ray will share his vision for Vocational Service this year.

Assignments:  Invocation/Flag Salute: Victoria Bentley (Carolyn Brown-Back-up).  50/50 Raffle: Andy Berwick.

Fiesta Float:

If anyone would like to work on the Rotary Fiesta Float, it’s taking shape at the Carriage House Museum near Pershing Park on Castillo near Los Banos…  Wednesday evening 6:30 – 9:00 PM painting and Thursday evening, 6:30 – 9:00 PM affixing the flowers.  The theme for this year’s float is “Strong Traditions and an Eye on the Future.”  District Governor Luz Maria Ortiz Smith will be riding on the float as an astronaut with scenes of Old California on the float as well.  Just show up if you can help.  Questions can be directed to Walt Stephens at 805-962-2828.

Board Meeting set for the 18th at 11:00 AM.
